The Tech Foundation: How to Make AI Understand Your Website

Before AI tools can cite your brand, they first need to read your website, understand what your company does, and find the right information. This is where GEO comes in.

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is mostly about publishing good content and building credibility. But none of it really matters if AI systems cannot read your site clearly in the first place. If your site is confusing, blocked, inconsistent, or missing basic technical signals, AI tools may misunderstand your brand — or ignore your website completely.

Here are the main technical foundations to check.

1. Structured data: labels for machines


Structured data is a way of adding extra labels to your website so machines can understand it more easily. For example, a human can read your “About” page and understand that it describes your company. But a machine may need clearer signals. Structured data can tell it:

  • this is an organization
  • this is a product
  • this is an article
  • this is an FAQ

All this labelling helps AI systems understand your brand, your products and your key facts without having to guess. Which is important, because many AI errors come from uncertainty. 

Do: Add structured data for your organization, products, important articles, and FAQs. Make sure the information matches what you say elsewhere on your website.

2. llms.txt: a simple guide for AI tools


llms.txt is a new and still emerging idea. It’s a simple text file on your website that points AI systems to your most important content. You can think of it as a short reading list for AI tools. It might include links to your About page, your main product or service pages and your best research, guides, or case studies. llms.txt isn't a fixed standard yet, not every AI system uses it. But it is easy to create, costs very little, and gives you one place to say: “If you want to understand our company, start here.”

Do: Create an llms.txt file that links to your most important and most reliable pages.

3. AI-bot access: Don’t block the tools you want to cite you


AI systems use crawlers, also known as bots, to read websites. Some websites intentionally block these bots. Others do so accidentally because of default settings in their so-called robots.txt file. It is important to understand this, because if an AI crawler cannot access your website, it cannot use it as a source. Put simply, if you block the reader, you should not expect to be quoted.

That said, this doesn't mean that every company should allow every AI bot. But this decision should always be deliberate, not accidental.

Do: Check whether your website blocks AI crawlers. If you want to be cited by AI answer engines, ensure that the relevant bots can access your content.

4. The basic website signals still matter


Some technical basics may sound boring, but they help machines read your website properly.

These include:

  • clear main headlines and logical subheadings
  • accurate titles, descriptions, and canonical tags
  • HTTPS and fast loading pages
  • alt text and declared language
  • consistent company details

None of these things will make your brand famous on its own. But together, they make your website easier to understand and harder to misread.

Do: Treat the fundamentals as part of your work on AI visibility, rather than just traditional SEO housekeeping.

Machine-readable ≠ meaningful 


Technical improvements alone do not create visibility. But if technical issues are present, they can limit how well AI systems access, read, and interpret your website. While strong content and reputation matter most, they are more effective when AI systems can reliably access and understand your site.
