News from our developers: Everything you need to know about the Drupal 9 update

Sergeant Update to Drupal 9
Written by

Drupal 8 has an expiration date. From November 2, all websites with the CMS should run on Drupal 9. But what’s really going to change for you and what do you need to know in order to prepare? We got some answers. (Spoiler alert: We’ll take care of everything.)

What’s gonna change?

Honestly? Not too much. It’s not like Drupal 9 will sweep in with a magic bag full of new features. That’s not what these updates are about. This new version does something far more important: it sets the foundation for the long-lasting future of the CMS. For starters, Drupal 9 functions on a much more lean and clean code, because anything superfluous from the old version has been cleaned right off. And this is not just for the developers to enjoy: a clean, smaller code means the CMS is more efficient.

So why do I need the upgrade?

We’re not doing the update because the new features are essential, but because the old version won’t be supported anymore starting November 2. There will no longer be any security updates or code adjustments or support service. Nada. And while that may not be a problem right away, pretty soon websites running on the old versions will be more vulnerable to hacking. So keeping your CMS fit and up to date is mostly about keeping your website secure.

When should the upgrade happen?

Ideally: now. The most important modules needed are now ready for the upgrade to Drupal 9. At the latest: before the Drupal 8 expiration date on November 2.

How does it work?

Here's the good news: upgrading to Drupal 9 can be a little time-consuming, but it is predictable, smooth work. The update was specifically designed not to drive developers mad. While the change from Drupal 7 to Drupal 8 may have been a mammoth task, this update is a baby elephant in comparison. And that's only for the developers who have to do it. For you, it's a leisurely visit to the zoo.

How long will Drupal 9 last?

We don’t need to worry about the next big upgrade anytime soon. At the moment, the expected date is November 2023. But even then, the update will be predictable and doable. If the maintenance of your CMS is good year-round, even the large updates are smooth sailing.
